Formal Letter: a proper letter is one written in an orderly and traditional language and follows a selected stipulated format. These letters are written for official purposes only, like writing a letter to the manager, to the HR manager, to an employee, to the Principal of the school or school, to an educator , etc.
Informal Letter: an off-the-cuff letter may be a non-official letter that we usually use to write down to our friends, family or relatives. These letters are personal letters that aren't used for official purposes.
